Scrapbook Rainbows Technique: A Border of Scraps

#scrapbookrainbows Rainbow Scrapbooking Page by Shimelle

I use the word ‘technique’ pretty loosely around here: it doesn’t need to have lots of steps that need explanation, nor lots of technical supplies and tools, nor lots of patience. If that last page’s technique was to create a rainbow of boxes in a grid, this time the technique is to find a rainbow of paper scraps and line them up to make a border for your scrapbook page. Totally a technique. Totally counts.

I would love to see the rainbow pages you’re creating! Please add the hashtag #scrapbookrainbows to any rainbow pages you post to social media so we can see a beautiful gallery of paper rainbow inspiration!

Supplies for this page – with affiliate links (if you purchase through these links, I receive a commission at no extra cost to you. Thank you as ever for your support!)
Yellow background paper from Sparkle City, red patterned paper from Field Trip, orange patterned paper by Simple Stories, yellow journaling card from Never Grow Up, green patterned paper from Sparkle City, blue ledger patterned paper from Field Trip, indigo (navy) rocket patterned paper from Field Trip, violet patterned paper from Never Grow Up, honeycomb stencil by Vicki Boutin (used with a wall paint sample from a local DIY shop), Mickey Mouse confetti punch, phrase thickers by Pebbles, multicoloured letter Thickers are from Little by Little and no longer available at scrapbook.com but you might have them in your stash! I also used assorted stickers and die cuts from older collections by just filtering through and looking for items in each colour of the spectrum.

I only scrapbook with rainbows now

Rainbow Scrapbook Page by Shimelle Laine with American Crafts Never Grow Up

No really. For as long as we are locked down, I’m just going to scrapbook with rainbows. Rainbows on my desk bring me great joy and I am all for the little things that bring us joy right now!

Also, once someone gave me product feedback that there are too many rainbows in the industry right now.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY RAINBOWS.

I just want to make my opinions clear on that.

If you also enjoy scrapbooking with rainbows and happen to share what you make on social media, add the #scrapbookrainbows hashtag, so we can have an amazing gallery of rainbow scrapbook pages!

The first of two Dinosaur Scrapbook Pages

Dinosaur scrapbook page by Shimelle Laine with Paige Evans' Bloom Street and dinosaur cut file

Hello and RAWR to you today, friends! It’s my turn to share a page on “Paige’s blog”: and today I’m scrapbooking with Bloom Street’s pastel colours and some dinosaurs. What could be a better way to spend the day? Pretty sure RAWR is dinosaur for ‘stay home and scrapbook’ and I’m on board.

I’ve had the Geometric Dinosaur cut file bookmarked in my mind for a while, but someone recently asked which papers I would use specifically from Bloom Street to bring this dino to life, so it had to be done! And it appears the answer is all the greens and purples, plus a cheeky pair of chipmunks.

You can watch it all from start to finish in this process video.

Thanks so much for braving this fearsome T-Rex and I wish you much pastel fun in your own creating this week!

A Dreamy Scrapbook Page with Paige Evans papers and cut file

Scrapbook Page by Shimelle Laine featuring Paige Evans' Bloom Street collection and Star Wreath cut file
Hey howdy hey friends! It’s my turn on Paige Evans’ blog and I’m excited to share with you a new layout using plenty of purple from Bloom Street along with this fab Star Wreath cut file and a photo from Disneyland!

Scrapbook Page by Shimelle Laine featuring Paige Evans' Bloom Street collection and Star Wreath cut file
The top I’m wearing in this photo has a space ranger badge on the front and says ‘to infinity and beyond!’ on the back, so I knew from the start I wanted to pair it with purple and green to play up the Buzz Lightyear memories, plus plenty of stars seem apt for a space ranger in Tomorrowland. I couldn’t decide between a star background or a star wreath, so put it to a vote on social media and the star wreath was the winner! I started the whole process by cutting that at the full page size from white cardstock on my Silhouette Cameo. You can watch the whole process from start to finish in this process video.

Thanks so much for taking a look, and please do let me know if you make something with purple, green, and stars any time soon.

All 12 Shimelle collections on a Single Scrapbook Page!

Don’t panic, but I have a small plan.

Almost every week, I broadcast two Facebook Live videos – Mondays at 1:30pm and Fridays at 9:30am – both UK time and both approximate times. And you don’t need to be a Facebook member to watch – only to comment. It’s all lovely fun and there’s a regular crowd who come by to heckle while I scrap and all is good.

Except Facebook’s ability to let you search through an archive is really not good. It’s nothing like YouTube in that respect and basically, a video is easy to watch for about a week and then it pretty much gets lost in a sea of stuff on Facebook. No one likes to trawl through the sea of stuff on Facebook.

(And also I tried a couple times taking the live video style to YouTube and the feedback made it abundantly clear that This Style Is Not Loved There and I get that. Each space for its own style – YouTube for edited and educational, Facebook for live chatting with me at my inevitably messy desk where I will lose the foam squares probably three times before I finish the layout.)

Here’s the small plan: I’ll keep on top of updating here with those videos and then that will add up to an archive that’s way easier to search. And when I get it suitably updated, I’ll even compile a pin board with all the layouts so you can see the page and go straight to the video, but that’s a step ahead of where I am today. Today, have one layout with at least something from all twelve collections I have made with American Crafts!

We’ll see if I can stay on top of it all. Send strength, wish me luck, whatever seems right.

My first page with Paige Evans' Bloom Street collection

scrapbook page with the Bloom Street paper collection and Love Love Love cut file, both from Paige Evans

One of my favourite things to come out of the start of 2020 is the chance to work in a new way with an old friend: as part of the cut file design team from none other than Paige Evans. Today I’m sharing the first page I’ve made as part of that team with her Love Love Love cut file and her beautiful new Bloom Street collection.

Here’s a look at how it all came together, with one photo taken just outside It’s a Small World at Disneyland Paris, and one patterned paper per word of the cut file. Plus a little thread to finish it all!

I cut my files like this with the Silhouette Cameo 3 and smooth white cardstock, then adhere with the same adhesive I use for almost everything: the Kokuyo dot roller.

What I Will Be Using for Journal your Christmas 2019

2019 Christmas Basics Stamps

I know, I know, it’s only October and it’s most definitely Spook and Pumpkin Season, not Christmas Tree Season, but every year there is this one thing we need to talk here about before December hits us. Yes, I will be creating another Christmas journal! Yes, I will be teaching Journal your Christmas again (and yes, you can sign up any time, it doesn’t matter that the sign up video says 2015)! And Yes, I have worked out the supplies I’ll be using, and there is a way you can use them too.

First up is this year’s stamp set. I found myself really wanting something that was very basic in style and easy to use throughout my journal, even when I was working with small spaces. I always want to have a set of numbers, so instead of two sets this year, one set with numbers and the simplest of things that I know I will be stamping almost every day throughout my album. (They also mix very well with the letter stickers I’m using this year, so some of these words can be made into longer phrases by mixing those up!)

These are high quality photo-polymer stamps made here in the UK and packaged and shipped from me in London. International postage is included, and I will post anywhere in the world – $14 or £11. You can pre-order now! Pre-order is open for one week only, and will close on Saturday 12th October. Stamps will ship in early November, likely around the 8th.

Use this first button to order in US Dollars: $14 includes postage.

Use this second button to order in UK Pounds: £11 includes postage.

Last year, the vast majority of pre-order customers opted to pay in full from the beginning, so the stamps would ship as soon as possible and there wouldn’t be a need to pay a balance later, so I’m just offering the total price here now. BUT if paying half now and half when they are ready to ship is far preferable to you, please just send me an email and we can work that out too.

2019 Christmas Kit

And on we go to the second half of what I use: the kit!
The kit itself will work a little differently this year, in order to ensure the kit suits you and arrives in time for you to get crafting! In fact, you can go ahead and shop right now and your order will be on its way – no extra waiting. I’ve assembled everything I’m using (aside from stamps, inks, and some smooth white cardstock) in a shopping list at scrapbook.com. You can use this shopping list in a few ways:

*Click through this affiliate link and add one of everything to your shopping cart, check out, and scrapbook.com will pack and ship your order immediately. They ship worldwide, so it is an option to order from them if you’re not in the states, though postage costs may be an issue.

*Click through and use the list simply as a reference to shop elsewhere. Want to support your local store? Please do! Want to shop somewhere in your own country? That makes total sense. There is no obligation to shop through scrapbook.com, but the list will give you all the product names and details so you can pick up these products at the store of your choice. No problem!

*Click through and use the list as a guideline. If you see something you love and would use more, add more than one. (I ordered two sheets of vellum and one of everything else on the list.) If you see something you know you will not use, don’t add it. If you see something you already have (either exactly or close enough), don’t add it and just pull it from your stash. You are in control here so you can make it fit your budget, big or small. You might want to add snow themes if you have a very wintry Christmas, or something to fit the theme of a particular tradition that is meaningful to your family. You could also add inks in colours you’ll want to stamp. Totally up to you.

*Click through and use the list to shop your stash for things that are close enough. If you have Christmas stash a-plenty, there is no reason not to use it. This can be a good guideline for how much ‘stuff’ you need! I find it’s absolutely key to not be overwhelmed with All The Christmas Things so I can stay on track and get daily entries done, but daily entries are definitely not a requirement! Adjust to suit your needs, always.

And yes, for clarity: it’s an affiliate link, so the products cost the same to you, but scrapbook.com gives me a small commission for directing you there. Thanks for supporting me that way! Here’s the link to the list, one last time!

As always, there is a mix of things that are specifically Christmas and things that are not, but have good colours to work with Christmas. I aim to give you a kit that will continue to work outside Christmas if you have leftover supplies after your journal.

Crate Paper has a new wintry collection coming out in a week or so, and I may be adding a sheet or two from that to my Christmas kit. You can see it in the coming soon section if winter accents are something you’d like to add.

And lastly, the album.

I love the 6×8 size for this project and have used that size for several years. I still have a couple empty 6×8 Studio Calico Handbook albums, and I have plenty of those page protectors, so that’s what I will be using again. I use a mix of page pocket sizes, with some full 6×8 pages, some divided into 3×4 and/or 4×6 pockets, and some with an assortment of other sizes. I also add in some elements with no page protectors at all by just punching holes.

There are plenty of 6×8 albums available from a range of manufacturers, and page protectors to match. Pick something you like!

Or follow along with absolutely any album format that suits you. Some like the traveler’s notebook set up for Journal your Christmas, and that can work well if you like working with smaller spaces and no page protectors. Some prefer to keep everything 8.5×11 or 12×12 and just do pages on the days they most feel like it rather than trying to tackle an entry every day. My favourites have been the 6×8 and 6×12 albums, both with pockets, though pocket pages are not something I work with throughout the rest of the year usually. I think this is my perfect balance!

Okay! That’s all about Christmas for now, and we’ll talk more about Christmas when we get to November! Thanks so much.

Level Up: A New Online Scrapbooking Class

Level Up: Online Scrapbooking Class from Shimelle Laine

Now I love making a scrapbook page more than the vast majority of the population, but making a layout that really feels like something new and exciting? Those are the moments that feel like ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED. Next level crafting that reminds me of the joy I find in memory keeping and in creating pages, from the photos to the stories to the pretty paper. I’ve always found it’s way too overwhelming to think about developing my crafting style by looking at all the elements at once. Instead, I go through seasons where I really focus on improving my photography, and times when I really write and draft to get the words just how I want them, and days when it’s all about where things can go on the canvas of a page, and times when I want to try every new embellishment technique I can find. So it makes perfect sense to me that the way we can level up is to take the time to look at each of those things closely. Just imagine the level of Achievement Unlocked it will feel when you put all those things together on your pages! I hope you’ll join me in class and level right on up!

Level Up starts Tuesday the 5th of March 2019, and includes four weeks of class materials in video and printable PDF formats. We will focus on one specific topic each week and you’ll identify your strengths, joys, and challenges at the beginning of the week and follow steps to improve your skills and make it all easier: levelling up! Those four topics are photography, page composition, writing, and embellishment.

Photography: join in with your phone, point and shoot, or SLR camera. We’ll be looking at portraits, still life, and scenery, and you’re welcome to try all three or choose one to really bring it into focus. If you will be shooting on a DSLR camera, I would suggest reading through the Camera School section of the blog first, so we can go beyond those points in class.

Page Composition: how many photos and where can they go on the page? We will look at both single and double page layouts (and a tiny look at pockets alongside full pages) and where things can go on those 12×12 pages. I really do believe there is a page design for every occasion, so we will look for that right occasion for everything from a single photo layout to more than a dozen photos from a single day.

Writing: after I’ve done the pretty stuff, I’m supposed to journal too? You might already love to journal or you might currently be aiming to just get a name and date on the page. Either way, you can level up. We’ll explore different ways to find your own voice and make the writing feel just right.

Embellishment: then the pretty stuff to close! We’ll try different techniques with different supplies you have on hand – and there will be things to try if your stash is limited and things if it’s really, really not. I even went out and learned some new techniques I had never tried for this topic, so I am excited to see you put your own spin on those.

There will also be a few live Q&A video sessions to discuss the class materials. All the other class videos are edited, instructional videos. (Just thought I’d clarify if you’re new to class and have been hanging out in my much more casual environment of Facebook Life scrapping! I don’t talk about random rubbish in class videos. Also, is it to the point where I need to start using a trademark symbol after the words ‘random rubbish’? Answers on a postcard please.)

If you have a annual pass from 2018, this class is included and will appear on your class list when the forum opens. No need to do anything else.

If you don’t have an annual pass, you can sign up for just this course in your choice of currencies: $30 US dollars or £23 UK pounds. If neither of those is your currency, you can choose the one that is best for you.

$30 – US Dollars

£23 – UK Pounds

(You will be taken to PayPal’s secure website, where you may pay by credit/debit card or a PayPal balance.)

Once you sign up, you will receive a PayPal receipt email confirming your completed payment. The forums will open next week, and when that happens you will also receive an email from me welcoming you to class. Any questions, just email me.
