Scrapbooking Sketch of the week

After much lovely warm weather, today it has been so chilly that it seems apt that this wintry layout falls as this week’s sketch! Maybe I needed the reminder that it really isn’t freezing cold – it was just a combination of being spoilt by spring weather and dreadfully tricked by a boiler that was fine in its yearly inspection on Monday but today decided it had lit its last fire. Strangely I did not panic as quickly as usual at the aspect of no hot water – oh, how I have mellowed! {Not to worry – it apparently shall be back to working order tomorrow, when someone will come to fix it and wonder why there are umpteen boxes of craft supplies in our hallway, for it never fails that something breaks just as you do something to make you wish for no guests at all. Or perhaps that is just me.} So yes: a winter layout for this week’s sketch with space for one or more photos, a fancy border and an embellished title.

If you don’t scrap single photos or don’t print pictures larger than 4×6, please don’t panic: you can fill all the grey space there at the left with photos in any way, so it would work with two 4×6 pictures, one larger print, a collage or smaller prints – whatever you prefer. And the sketch is simple in outline for a reason: instead of piling on lots of patterned papers with this page, all the detail is in the border at the middle and the title. It’s a great place to use plenty of small pieces from scraps of your favourite papers, plus little embellishments that add dimension like buttons, gems or epoxy circles.

As always, the weekly sketch is no-stress and just for fun! If you use it, I’d love to see, so please leave a link in the comments. (And an extra thank you to those of you who have been pinning the weekly sketches to your Pinterest boards! It pretty much made my day when that popped up on my screen!)

I think last week was our busiest week yet in terms of how many pages were created, blogged and linked to in the comments! It was tough to choose this week, but these are ten of my favourites. Click through below to see any of these in more detail!
Top row, L to R: one, two, three, four, five.
Bottom row, L to R: six, seven, eight, nine and ten.

So… what bits and pieces are you going to create into a lovely border for this week? Can’t wait to see!

Scrapbooking Sketch of the week

It’s Wednesday, so how about a little sketch for a scrapbook page or two? This one is a bit simpler compared to last week, so probably a bit quicker to put together! And this layout of Leanne and family just makes me smile! It also makes me notice just how much I truly love letter stickers. If letter stickers had their own fan club, I think I would join. Which reminds me of the days of the Lisa Frank sticker club of my youth. I often wonder how many Lisa Frank sticker fans are now scrapbookers. Important issues that go through my brain, obviously.

So here is this week’s sketch. Although it’s shown with a single photo, it can easily be adapted to two or more photos in the same space there in the middle of the page. You don’t need to use the scrolled label shape either – you could substitute any shape that fits the style of your page. The idea is to repeat that shape once above and once below the photo. I have to remind myself that sometimes you can repeat a shape without repeating the same exact embellishment!

Here are eight of my favourite pages posted from last week’s sketch. Click to see any of these pages in more detail!

It’s Wednesday, so time for a page and a sketch! This sketch is not completely removed from the design concept featured in the January edition of 4×6 Photo Love – it’s one 4×6 photo and a loose line of embellishments. But from there things are switched around, with layers of patterned paper and a different placement on the page. (By the way, that’s Laura and Will, who recently announced something lovely!)

Here’s a very quick look at how the page came together.

scrapbooking sketch
Here’s how it breaks down, with one landscape photo and lots of blocks of patterned paper. You can simplify easily by replacing all those layers with just two or three. And you can swap out flowers for any other motif – snowflakes, butterflies, footballs, cupcakes, doilies… do you like how I threw in one that I don’t tend to use on my pages? I’m sure you can think of others as you probably don’t suffer from repetitive embellishment injury like I do! (Or maybe we all do!)

As always, the weekly sketch is a no-stress challenge to create something if you fancy! If you do, I’d love to see what you make – leave a link in the comments!

How about a dozen pages from last week’s sketch? Click through to see any of them in more detail!
Top Row, L to R: one, two, three, four.
Middle Row, L to R: five, six, seven, eight.
Bottom Row, L to R: nine, ten, eleven, and twelve.

Thank you to everyone who has joined in or is saving the sketches for future crafting time. I love seeing what you’ve made and I’m so honoured that you like them!

And one little note from Monday – several people said a Q&A sounded cool, but there are only a few questions so far! If there’s anything you want to know about our crazy round-the-world adventure, let me know so I can include it. Thanks!

Have a lovely Wednesday!

Scrapbooking Sketch of the week

Say hello to lovely friends Leanne and Kevin on this week’s page, one from the garden at Two Peas. They are getting married this summer and I am so excited to catch up with them when I get home (so soon now!) to hear all about their wedding plans. And these photos? Taken at another wedding, so there we go!

scrapbooking sketch
I suppose this sketch could look a tiny bit crazy, but I promise there is method to my madness. Or at least that’s what I tell myself. Look at the sketch from right to left (probably opposite to how your eyes naturally flow) and see how the boxes of patterned paper start quite big on the right (12” strips of paper) and then get smaller and boxier as they head toward the left edge of the page. Great for using lots of patterns or colours, and you can just skim through your scraps to find some strips for the longer pieces of paper and smaller boxes for the area to the left of the photos. (Again, it’s two four by six pictures! How I swoon.) Once in the habit of using up all those bits and pieces of paper, I just carried on with the embellishment, so I grabbed lots of sticker sheets that were three-quarters used and just had a few bits left and threw quite a few of them at this page. You can do the same or you can keep it much cleaner if you prefer!

As always, the sketch is for fun and no stress! If you create something, please link us up in the comments as I’d love to see and share it here too.

This week’s sketch is a little more open to interpretation, since it’s easy to change the number of photos, size of the pictures or the placement on the page without having to make too many changes to the original design. (Also, while we’re looking at this layout, don’t you think the cardstock companies need to embrace grey even more? I love grey cardstock as a background! Grey dotted swiss would seriously make my year. The world needs a steady stream of beautiful grey papers, I do believe.)

scrapbooking sketch
While several of the sketches I’ve shared are great for using lots of patterned paper, this sketch is a stash-buster of another kind: it’s great for using lots of bits and pieces of papers and stickers. Perfect for the sort of stuff that ends up sitting on your table once you’ve finished one layout, so you can keep this sketch handy and just create a second page instead of worrying about where to put even more small pieces of paper and unstuck border stickers!

I’m loving a bit of acrylic paint splashed over the embellishment for a finishing touch. I used black and yellow paints on this page, and just use a dry paint brush to splatter it over different elements of the page. Easy! Now it’s your turn – I wonder what you’ll scrap with this sketch! If you create something, I hope you’ll leave us a comment below so we can see.

And on that note, here are some favourites from our last sketch! (Actually, sketch of the week skipped a week since last week’s Jenni Bowlin challenge had a sketch of its own… and I think one sketch a week is quite enough for here!) Click these links to see these pages in more detail:
Top row, L to R: one, two, three.
Bottom row, L to R: four, five and six.

I hope you like this sketch. Happy scrapping!
