Embellishing Baby Scrapbook Pages

scrapbooking embellished pages @ shimelle.com
With Wonder Boy now just over a month old, I’m starting to think more and more about how his baby album will look. I scrapbook with so much that can be seen as feminine: lacy layers, butterflies, and a heap of pink. I’m not hugely worried about any sort of gender roles of pretty paper (after all, The Boy wore pink for our wedding, so clearly we don’t have any girls-only rules for pink in this household), I don’t want it to feel visually the same as stories that are purely my own. He deserves his own trademark look! How will I keep the embellishment true to something I love without making it girly to the point of confusion? I’ll start working on that soon. To help with my inspiration, I’ve asked three of my favourite scrapbookers to share an embellished baby page with you today, with their beautiful looks for scrapping baby girls in their lives.

First up: Megan Klauer.

I used the new Crate Paper line: StyleBoard by Maggie Holmes to showcase the photo of my friend’s little girl. To add a bit of a girly touch, I added one of the paper bows to the layered prize ribbons. That makes for layering done easily, perfect if you’re short on time.

And something delicate from Stephanie Bryan.

Two things that make my heart go pitter-patter are baby photos and embellishments! Combine the two and and I am in heaven! I knew I wanted to use a cluster of embellishments on my page, so I chose to use a larger photo of my daughter to help balance out the layout. I built my photo layers using a few larger pieces of patterned paper and a large doily. My embellishment cluster is placed to the left hand side of my photo since the main focus of the page is to the right hand side. I used my photo as the guide for choosing my embellishments and tried to coordinate my colors with the different colors in the photo. I kept my journaling simple by typing onto my patterned paper and layered a die cut title and chipboard heart in the opposite corner to continue the overall balance of the page.

Then a bit of loveliness from Mel Blackburn.

My inspiration for this layout was the wonderful frames which I thought would be ideal to create mini canvas to showcase embellishments that would complete the picture of my youngest daughter. I loved the gold horse and mini bow, I thought both would be ideal for a baby page, although not traditional items like a baby cradle or a stroke, they added a fun whimsy feel to my layout. I hope you enjoy!

And finally, a little something from the archives. Before Wonder Boy, Glitter Girl scrapbooked the occasional baby page between the little ones of friends and family. She even has a god-daughter who appears in her albums of course, this time with lots of layers and tiny details. I loved making this layout, but spending so much time on one page seems a little far off right now! (Further details on this page can be found here.)

Any examples – of either your favourite embellished baby pages or things I should keep in mind in scrapping Wonder Boy’s first year – to share? I can’t get enough of the cute baby inspiration right now, so bring it on!

I realised when going though my baby albums most pages are about firsts. First tooth first swim first holiday etc
I have tried to avoid it but it judged seemed impossible. Embrace the firsts in a baby album. Maybe you could use that as a common thing throughout the album.
There is some great boy papers out there. I’ve started to prefer them to the more floral girly stuff.

If you’re anything like me, you will take soooo many photos, and want to scrap way too many of them and just not have enough time. They change so fast too, that it really is worth taking all the photos. :) I have one monthly album, with photos and notes from each month of my daughter’s first year (which now seems to have jumped to yearly, as I am adding turning two in at the moment). I did pocket pages for most of the rest, so that I could put lots of photos in and scrap some of my favourites on pretty pages; I kept way too many photos in that though so she has less of a baby album and more of a baby-three-albums. :) which adds up to… Write stuff down, maybe on post it’s or a journal or your iPhone- it’s true, you’ll forget the details way more quickly than you think, because the thing with babies and toddlers is there is always something new happening! And be picky about the photos you keep- you’ll take a lot, so you have that flexibility to keep the ones that tell a story and are good. I feel like I’m preaching not just to the choir but to the preacher themselves, but you did ask. :) hope you’re all doing well and getting as much sleep and time to yourself as feasibly possible! :)

You are a storyteller. Have you thought about scrapbooking YOUR first year with Wonder Boy? Those feelings of wonder, panic, and exhaustion will be just as precious to remember as every tiny thing he does (especially in these first few months when he eats, sleeps, poops. Repeat.) A Project Life-type album for all those other pictures is a really good solution. I’m so happy for you.

It’s a tricky one. Like decorating the nursery before you meet him. I went with the colour s I liked to dress my son in. He was never a pastel blue boy

Shimelle, congratulation on your baby boy ♥ I’m so happy for you!
I decided to not make a special baby album for our son. And for the colours of the layouts I choose waht I like, sometimes the layout has pink on it – But I don’t mind ;-)

    So so cute pages!
I did a page each month when my son was a baby – on his personality, his likes and dislikes, his firsts, etc. I also did other pages along the way but I really like these double page spreads I did each month

I am using the project life neutral baby edition core kit for the majority of my “baby’s first year” kind of scrapbooking – at 3 months old, he has 20 page protectors worth full already so I think pocket pages were a good base approach for me for this (I have not previously done PL); forcing myself to keep it simple and stick with the core kit makes it so fast and easy to keep up with (time is precious!!) and to make sure I get the little bits written down. I embellish that with some elephant punches, wood veneer hearts, and green/gold/yellow washi tapes.

I am also scrapbooking 12×12 when I feel like it, to go in our regular album for 2014 (my system is very similar to yours as described in Cover to Cover).
Here’s my first full page of my little guy: So Much Laughter

I embellished that with little bits of paper and wood veneer stars. I’m also drawn to using enamel dots / pearls and stickers for his pages – most of my normal stuff, really. The only new thing I find myself specifically wanting to try because it’s “baby!!” are doilies :)

  8. caroline Says:

Congratulations Shimelle. One thing I wish that I had done with Ayla is pick a prop and take her photo with it on 18th every month til her 1st birthday. It shows better than any other trick their growth month by month.
I also took photos of her in my favourite outfits and with everyone who had lots of involvement with her. My fav photo is of her in the tummy tub at the hospice. I’ve yet to scrap it cos I want to do the photos justice LOL.
Have you thought about stars for your little wonder as an ongoing theme/embellishment? Most of all, just enjoy making the stories as well as scrapping them.

  9. kim strother Says:

I really just want to say congratulations!! I cannot wait to see the pages you create for boy wonder. I’m sure I will be scrap lifting many of them as my son is now 12 and I still have baby photos I want to scrap. He does have a baby album but the supplies are so much better now and his baby photos are some of my favorite, plus I have so many, that I’m sure I can make many more layouts.

I added one of the paper bows to the layered prize ribbons
