My nearly 10 year old daughter has a severe learning disability, and when she was born she had dense bi-lateral cataracts. We always put up our tree early (we call it her birthday tree) because when she was first born that was about all she could see. Putting up the tree is very special to our family (even though she has had successful surgery and can see very well now!) and we think of how far we’ve come when we turn on those coloured lights.

My favorite thing about the holidays is that its felt with all five senses! Yummy treats like cupcakes, fudge, candy canes(taste) the scent of fresh pine tree or something sweet baking(scent) the warm feelings I get when I receive a card from a loved one, the feel of the cold snow or a cozy scarf around my neck(touch) the colorful and twinkling lights and displays, the gifts under the tree(sight) and the sound of carols being sung or played on my ipod (hearing). I love it all!
