Back to School...a little differently

Learn Something New

Ready to go back to school?

If you read anything here, you already know I’m a little freaked out because this is the first September in the history of my entire life that I am not going back to school. I’ve also had enough requests to run this class again that it seemed the apt thing to do. So yes, if you’ve been reading for a full year, you’ve seen this before. Don’t start thinking everything is going to be repeats — there’s plenty of new waiting for its moment to shine too!

Learn Something New Every Day is a class to start the autumn term. Over the month of September, we’ll make thirty entries in this small-format book designed to getting your eyes open to observing your world.

Worried about time? Fair enough. It does take time to make an entry every day. But the pages are small (6 inches square) and we’ll use some short cuts to keep your supplies to a nice small collection and we’ll focus on summary journalling rather than documenting each day with a full report. And every day you have the option of just duplicating the example page, so that could even eliminate your thinking time. We’re talking minutes every day here.

Yes, this is a repeat class from 2006. Everyone who signed up in 2006 gets to play again, if you fancy. For free. If you’re joining in for the first time in 2007, you’ll get to see their work as we go. With each prompt, I’ll send you a list of links to their work posted on the internet so you can stay inspired and see that you really can make a page every day for a month.

In this class, you get:

*An introductory shout-out to get you going

*30 daily prompts with full colour samples

*The chance to chat and share your work with other artists

*A Flickr group to post your pictures

Class begins September 1. Don’t be late!

Any questions? Just stick ‘em in the comments & I’ll get an answer to you asap.

Here’s to a great September, whether you’re in school or out!

A picture is worth a thousand words...

Here’s what you need to know:
If you have ten photos, you can make this book.

It will be a book that will live on your coffee table, a book you’ll be pleased to share with friends, family and visitors. A book that will say a lot about you, your family or your neighbourhood. A book that won’t be hard to make.

A picture is worth a thousand words… asks what if we could tell a story in ten pictures? The story you choose to tell is up to you: it could be the story of your life, the story of a certain romance or the story of a journey you wish you could live over and over again. It could be the story of who you were before, who you are now or who you are becoming each day. It could be the story of you but it could be the story of someone else. The story is in the ten pictures…and when you choose them, you choose the story.

A picture is worth a thousand words…
…starts Monday, the 30th of July, with an audio prompt.
…Eight downloadable PDF prompts take you through the process of making the book and telling your story.
…The prompts include sketches and photos of several finished examples so you can adapt the ideas to your own style and supplies.
…You can choose to follow along in real time and finish your book before the end of August or save all the materials for a rainy weekend and make the project over a few days later in the year.
…You can choose to join in email chat with other participants or just receive the class materials.
…You can keep your project to yourself, or post your work at our community blog, written down.
…You can make this album with the supplies you already own, but if you want to go shopping for supplies, I promise not to tell.
…And just to be extra special, you’ll receive a little care package in the post, with limited edition embellishments designed just for this project.

You may join in at any time, but be sure to join by July 28 in order to receive your care package promptly. You can join us no matter what country you’re in, though all the materials and the embellishments are in English.

PS: Thank you all SO MUCH for your excitement in the last post’s comments!! So, so psyched! The random number generator gave me number 185. That means AngelNikki_UK you are the winner! Email me the names and email addresses of four friends to join you! Congrats!

Pssssst.

So they say a picture is worth a thousand words, right?

Then what about ten pictures?

On Monday, you can sign up for a new online class for summer. You’ll need ten pictures. Not necessarily ten thousand words.

Also on Monday, you can see the first sneak peek of the actual project here.

But better yet: some lucky person who comments on this post any time between now and the sneak peek on Monday, will win five free passes on this class. You + four friends. You + your two sisters + your mum + your grandma. You + your other half + some wonderfully cool couple you both know. You + any four people you know that also have ten photos!

See you here on Monday!

When I Grow Up...

Ever thought back to what you said you would be when you grew up? Ever think it’s funny that you grew up to be something entirely different? Or exactly the same?

When I Grow Up is an online workshop designed to take you through an exploration of how your perspective has changed: is grown up life really what you thought it would be when you were a child? How have your dreams and priorities changed? How have you gained independence and made choices that give you a life you can now celebrate?

We’ll make a journal in a format of your choice—you’ll see the work of a new team of guest artists who have worked in formats varying from scrapbooks to written journals to altered board books to collage projects. Some are big. Some are small. All are personal. You’ll be telling your story like no one else can tell it.

Beginning on the 2nd of April, you’ll receive 10 prompts to take you through the process. They will be available for you to download in your choice of plain text or illustrated PDF, and offer advice for figuring out how to put your thoughts and images into words that tell a story. The illustrated files will take you through the work of several artists who have taken the challenge and offer you their expertise. They come from different places and different times in their lives, each offering her own unique perspective on how her ideas of growing up have changed. You’ll also be able to listen to an audio message that starts the process and have the option of discussing the project with other participants by email. If you would like to share your work, you’ll have posting access at WrittenDown, a group blog to follow the creations of all the participants.

There will be sneak peeks throughout this week and next, so please stop by for a look and feel free to ask any questions. I hope you’ll join us and tell your story!

PLEASE NOTE:
You can still sign up and receive all the class materials. But please know I will not have reliable internet access between the 6th and 14th of April. If you sign up for this class in that time frame, I will be sure to send you all files on the 15th. You will still be able to complete the class without any problems. Thank you for understanding!
