Last minute Hybrid Halloween Party

halloween cupcakes made with scrapbooking supplies

I’m sure right at the beginning of this month I had every intention of creating lovely Halloween decorations and sharing them with you. Somehow that plan ended up derailed! Instead I’m on a bit of a last minute kick with these party printables.

halloween party made with scrapbooking supplies

The printable set comes with little cards that can be used on their own, matted on the front of a greeting card or added to a treat bag, plus cupcake topper flags (just cut out and glue on a toothpick) and a poster too so you can put something on your door even if you didn’t have time to carve a pumpkin. Just thought I’d share in case anyone else is finding their plans of early decorating have gone astray.

I have a notion of doing a bit more today with a can of black spray paint and some old tin cans – will report back with results if it works! Or possibly even more entertaining if it doesn’t?

A few other notes…
…Pieces for Christmas Journal kits have started to arrive! No exact date yet for these to go on sale as not everything is here just yet, but it will be soon.
…Check back here tomorrow for a giveaway and some further notes on the new online class Blogging for Scrapbookers.
…Thank you so much for your kind words about the end of the magazine. It meant a great deal that many of you enjoy reading it!

Just one more issue

Scrapbook Inspirations Magazine

By now many of you have heard the news that the next issue of Scrapbook Inspirations will be the last, as it was announced late last week. Perhaps I hadn’t said anything here just yet because I was in a bit of denial. But also because it was admittedly quite difficult to read speculation from others as to how this happened, why this happened, how long it had been happening. It is very difficult to see speculation from the other side, when part of you wants to say ‘No, really, that’s not how it worked’ but really the end result is the same: after the Christmas issue, there will be no regular, monthly issue. I’ve worked on this magazine since issue two, and over the past few years have done more work behind the scenes, so inevitably it has been very sad news.

In a way, coming to work for SI came from a similar experience, going away with some scrapping friends for a weekend having just learned of the end of Scrapbooking Memories and More, a magazine we had worked on back when things like that were really in their infancy in the UK. We had all been upset about it individually and by the time we headed home, we had banded together in hopes of working together on something, somewhere. And SI gave us that opportunity and trusted us with ideas that went from silly conversations and rough pencil sketches into real articles. Sixty issues later, that is still a magical feeling for me. Working with that team always had energy and creativity and I loved seeing how we would each interpret a single idea.

It has also been lovely working with new scrappers, and recently new team members, as the hobby took a step in a new direction earlier this year and we were able to see new styles evolving from British scrappers. I know these ladies will continue to be inspiring crafters, even if I don’t have that little glee of seeing their work before it goes to press.

And please indulge me as I must say a huge public thank you to Rosie, Cara and Jane, our editors. These girls are amazing and I am so sorry that such amazing people are now faced with the upheaval that comes with the end of a job. Jane, our art editor, needs a medal just for not killing me, as I often send her notes like ‘I know this article was supposed to have three layouts but now it has five. Ummmm. Sorry.’ or ‘I dropped an ink pad on this layout at the last minute. Can you fix it?’ and I would completely expect her to call me every name in the book and just refuse to make the changes, but presto, it would have all five layouts and no scary ink pad evidence, beautifully and without any swearing that I ever heard. Cara is an organisational goddess, and I have never known anyone to be so calm with changes and short deadlines. If I were her, there would have been many times I would have shouted at me for leaving things close to the deadline (ahem, I am deadline motivated, but that is an entirely different discussion) but nope, she always had everything under control. And Rosie, well, Rosie is so awesome I have no words right now. And if I did, we would both get really upset to the point that it wouldn’t be pretty in any way, so let’s just say for now that I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with her and now I’m going to try to end this paragraph really quickly before I lose it.

Less than two weeks ago, we drafted the entire 2010 editorial calendar. There is so much stuff on there that makes me excited. Here’s to hoping it finds its place, even if it’s not where we first thought.

Zooming out

Most of the time, I am constantly trying to get closer to something with the camera. I love to find textures and shadows and hidden, sparkly light and sometimes eliminate the background entirely! But it’s time for something different.
Over the last two weeks, I’ve made a conscious decision to step back and zoom out with the camera to catch the whole scene. Sometimes even more than I can see with my own eyes, which is an interesting experiment!

What’s your favourite wide-angled shot? Share a link with us so we can all have plenty of zoomed-out inspiration!

A new online scrapbooking class :: Blogging for Scrapbookers

online scrapbooking class :: blogging for scrapbookers
I wish I could say I absolutely, without a single doubt, one-hundred-percent loved scrapbooking. I really, really do.

The problem is that I come in somewhere squarely at almost-entirely, so very close, ninety-nine-percent love scrapbooking, because there is one thing I do not love. And that is explaining what I do for a living.

Keep in mind that ‘scrapbooking’ is not an understood word in this country, so ‘scrapbooker’ would be even crazier. And the frustration is found in exactly how simple scrapbooking can be to us: it’s photos we’ve taken and words we’ve written and pretty things we’ve arranged to remember our lives. No matter how fabulous that seems to us, whenever I start to say that aloud, non-scrapbookers tend to look at me as if I have three heads.

But I have found my answer: the word ‘scrapbooking’ may not have taken off here, but the word ‘blogging’ certainly has. And how would you describe a blog? It’s photos we’ve taken and words we’ve written and maybe the odd pretty thing we’ve chosen to go along with all of that. Oh my word: could they be the same thing? So when I tell people that I work in scrapbooking, which is a lot like blogging, but on paper rather than online, finally I have rid myself of three-head syndrome. Success!

Of course, the more you think about it, the more this makes sense, and indeed scrapbooking and blogging can be each others’ best friends forever. As scrapbookers, we want to make time to remember the little and the big things in life. We want to take pictures. We want to write things down. And we want to decorate it up in the style of our choice. And blogging is exactly the same idea, just with a different process. That is the basic principle behind my newest online class: Blogging for Scrapbookers.

Throughout this class, we’ll discuss key concepts, but we’ll also blog and make scrapbook pages. The class starts with a workbook that walks you through all the technical stuff about blogging in simple steps with options to suit you. If you’re new to blogging, it will help you choose the best blogging platform for your needs. If you already blog, it will take you through applying a theme, adding custom graphics and interpreting your blog stats. That workbook, Blogging Blueprints, is something you can come back to at any time if you want to change something on your blog or reference anything technical.

ETA: You can sign up for this class at any time — not just for November. More details below. There is a live run of this class starting on the 21st of March, 2011, so join us now!

Starting Monday 2nd November, 15 full colour prompts will take you through fifteen separate topics, each with a corresponding blog post and scrapbook page to make. We’ll cover topics like making your blog public or private, what to blog when your day seems pretty mundane, how to tell just enough so you don’t run out of stories to tell, how to get readers to leave comments, making blog posts come easily and quickly and getting others involved. The prompts are delivered straight to your inbox, Monday to Friday, and you can choose to use the prompts on a day-by-day basis or work through them at your own pace. There is absolutely no feeling like you’ve fallen behind in this class.

At the end of the 15 prompts, you’re just getting started. The second workbook, A Year of Blogging, is a downloadable resource with a full year of blogging topics just for scrapbookers. With all those potential blog posts just waiting to be written from your perspective, you’ll never have to worry about running out of things to post on your blog, whether you’ve chosen to start a new blog or just breathe a little more life into your existing account. The two workbooks and the 15 prompts total well over 100 pages of content.

As with all my classes, you’ll have access to a private message board just for participants in the class, so you can discuss all the topics as much (or as little) as you like. It also means you’ll never have to worry about starting a blog and not being able to find anyone to read it or leave a comment, because you’ll instantly have a group of scrappers in the same boat. Just leave them a link and you’ll have instant readers — making friends hasn’t been this easy since primary school!

If you’re new to my classes, I’ve been teaching online since 2004, blogging since 2002 and scrapbooking for more years than I care to admit. Above everything, I believe in keeping scrapbooking stress-free and fun: this is something we do because we love it, never because it has to be done. Taking a class in scrapbooking follows that same exact rule. No stress, no worry, always fun and you’ll gain a new tool for driving your scrapbooking, whether you choose to keep your blog for yourself or open it to the world to read.

digital scrapbooking creative team call

Creative Team members will be required to create and post a minimum of two projects per calendar month. Projects should be posted on your blog, the Two Peas digital gallery and at least one other digital gallery of your choice. In exchange, you’ll receive every release from my digi line free for team and personal use.

Creative Team members can be members of other teams too – it’s not an exclusive team. Applicants from anywhere in the world are most welcome.

To be considered for the team, send me an email including:
—->a link to your blog
—->a link to a gallery of your pages
—->a brief introduction letting me know why you would like to be on the team
—->a little something made with one or more elements from this free download. Mix it up with your favourite digi or paper products.

(Those of you who sent links a while back when I asked more subtly — if you would be up for a longer-term commitment, just let me know!)

Call ends Tuesday 3rd November — two weeks from today.
Any questions, just let me know! Thanks!
