Finding inspiration from girls who wear glasses

A funny little inspiration point to share with you this morning! I’ve worn glasses since I was about thirteen and to me, they are just part of who I am. If I look in the mirror without my glasses I see a stranger instead of a reflection! But I never realised that some people have such a bias against glasses until the time I was innocently browsing a wedding fair and a make-up artist grabbed my arm and used me as an example to a crowd of listening customers. Obviously she’s not going to wear her glasses for her wedding, because if you wear glasses all your guests will talk about is how you look as ugly as a librarian.

Seriously? Of course this woman was crazy (as well as rude!) but I couldn’t think of an end to the number of things she said that were wrong! Librarian does not mean ugly! My guests are going to be my family and friends and they all know me with glasses, so why would they talk about it? And no, it’s not an obvious that I wouldn’t wear glasses. Sheesh, what a strange thing to say at all! (Never fear, instead of not wearing my glasses, I got new glasses which was far more fun!)

Anyway, I find girls who wear glasses to be inspiring. A bit empowering. A teeny little reminder that we all have little things that make us unique and what others see as a negative might actually be a positive if we want it to be.

Plus it probably took me at least ten years of growing up to realise that the biggest bit of teasing I got at thirteen and fourteen was that glasses were for brainy people. You know what?

I am really okay with that!

What funny little thing in the world do you find empowering? Do share!

Thank you Shimelle, I’m going to let my 10yr old daughter read this later. We are having such upsets with her lately as she hates wearing glasses so much. Eventhough she’s worn them since she was 4. It’s really knocking her confidence when she’s around people she doesn’t know. She spends so much time in tears. Thank you and I agree with you too xx

I wear glasses…but was a late ‘developer’ so to speak – only needing them from when I was 21. It meant I by-passed the akwardness of childhood and teenage glasses (although there are such ‘cooler’ glasses out there now for young people). I wear contact occasionally, but have dry eyes so they annoy me, and I have no probs wearing my glasses. Also I have teeny eyes, and have been told by my blunt sister that ‘I should never not wear glasses again – they add a feature to my face’. It’s amazing how you get used to them and I have friends who wear their (reading glasses) to meetings at work to look more important and be taken more seriously. So while it’s tricky when you’re younger, I have definitely ‘grown into them’. Must scrap my new ones! Thanks for the post. I also reckon that about 25% of the pop wear glasses or contacts – I often find myself trying to work out the stats in a room at a conference, etc….probably more boredom than science though!

    I Love this post.
I started wearing glasses when I was 7 and they are so much a part of me. I really don’t like the look without them.
    Funny story …..
I had eye problems a couple of years ago which they thought contact would improve. I was so self conscious without glassess I had clear glasses I wore when i had lenses in so my face wasn’t naked!! I guess only someone who wears glasses would understand that one!
The lenses didn’t work so i am back to my usual comforting specs.
The only pain – watch how people who wear glasses walk int he rain …. head down, protecting those lenses. Until they figure out wipers I guess we always will.

oh my god, what a cheeky woman! I hope noone has the bad luck to have her as a wedding guest.. I do hate when people use “obviously” or “of course” with statements that don’t necessarily apply to everyone.

Morning. I too wear glasses :) Lucky you to be able to see yourself in the mirror without them lol, I have to be about 2inche from it lol. I wore my glasses at my wedding too….back then they were the size of Deirdre Barlow’s lol……I had kids tease me at school, but in time I learnt that kids tease because of someone else being unique and they are not. I have used contacts, but now only for occasions as they are a faff. As for that person at the wedding fair how RUDE!!! Reminds me I must scrap about my glasses…..right from the start….the joy?! of NHS Glasses lol…..I have scrapped about my sight and how lucky I am to have it, but not my glasses……might get around one day to digging out some old photos and new ones…..I have a photo of my brother when he wore glasses and looked like a character off the TV called Jo 90! TTFN

Totally agree with your post, I love myself in glasses and feel weird without them on.

I have a stylish wardrobe of 6 pairs of glasses so they always match my outfit, I must say that I am known by alot of my colleagues for the glasses I wear.

I am a proud glasses wearer………..hmmm I think this coule be a new LO idea.

  7. Cal Says:

Tee hee!!! I wear glasses…and I am a Library Manager, so I guess the lady at the wedding fayre would think I was doomed!!!!! I love my glasses, I do wear contacts when I want to, but I love the having the choice! Yes, I think I sense a LO coming on!!

  8. Alix Says:

i’m with you on this one, shimelle…and all you specky friends out there!!
i got mine at age 13 too…and that was in the ’80’s…i had a huge plastic pair that looked like paint in every colour of the rainbow had been splattered on them!! not subtle…but nobody teased me…in fact…3 other girls in my school went on to get the same ones!!
i’ve never had a problem with them…they are an accessory like jewellery…and as you say…when i dont wear them…i don’t recognise or feel like me…and that is the real bummer!!

  9. EllenC Says:

My ex-mother-in-law asked if I was going to get laser eye surgery, so that I wouldn’t have to wear glasses on my wedding day! As I said … ex-mother-in-law!

  10. Lorna Says:

I have worn glsses since i was 10 and often get asked if considered contacts. Even though i cant wear them I wouldn’t because I would feel I have forgotten something if didn’t put glasses on. They are part of me. Plus when a spot breaks out I wear my “posh” frames they not only help me feel good but people are looking at them and not my spot :)
Funny thing about Librarian comment I once got asked for help in a library, they thought I worked there I took it as a compliment. LOL

  11. Kirsty.a Says:

What about girls who wear hearing aids?
I wear glasses for driving and at work and they don’t bother me, but I’ve just been told I need a hearing aid too and (at not quite 40) that was a shock. Don’t tell me there’s no difference between we all know there is.

  12. katrina thomas Says:

I’ve worn glasses for years, I flirt with wearing contacts every now and then and then I forget that I have them and get back into my glasses.
I’m terrible for searching for my glasses when I have contacts in and slipping on the glasses to have very blurry vision – ouch!
At the moment the kids at school all have fake glasses as ‘geek’ glasses are in fashion.

  13. helen miles Says:

omg, i totally go for guys who wear glasses, seriously lush!

  14. choon bin wee Says:

thks shimelle…..yes, sometimes, people give gals who wear glasses a miss!!!! I am fine with wearing my spectacles….I have many friends thinking of going for lasik as for me, I rather pick yp another fancy pair of frames :) And I think it takes tonns of guts to wear spectacles on ur wedding….u rock, gal!!!

  15. Margaret Anne Clark Says:

My daughter has worn glasses since she was 18mo old, and strangers comments have only been about how cute she looks! And she SOOOO does ! I can’t imagine her not wearing them now, adn we treat them almost like face jewellery – she has got to pick new frames each time (with a little steering!!!) BTW – I think you look TOTALLY cool in your glasses! Love ‘em !!

  16. Becky Says:

Wonderful post! I started wearing glasses when I was 8, but didn’t need them full time until I was about 18 (when I started driving!). I have tried contacts, but really prefer to wear glasses – I don’t look like me when I don’t wear them! My daughter who is 19 started wearing glasses all the time from the age of 7 and again, she has tried contacts, but says that if people think she looks geeky in glasses then that’s ok with her!

  17. Theresa Rodriguez Says:

My curly hair…is my super power!

Followed very closely by my wicked intelligence. I like being a nerdy girl.
