Scrapbook Design School :: Maintaining Continuity in an Album

Turns out Learn Something New isn’t the only bit of back-to-school scrapbooking on my desk at the moment. At Two Peas, the Garden Girls are going back to school with a twist – it’s all about the elements of making stand-out pages, cards and albums. It’s called Design School. It’s a free event with a range of example projects plus PDFs to review design principles and inspire your projects.

My part in all that design talk is the idea of continuity, and specifically how I try to keep some continuity throughout an album. In particular, there were two pages in my album that were bothering me as neither stayed true to the continuity elements throughout the rest of the book and wouldn’t you know they ended up on facing pages in my album. So I set out to find a way to remedy this and make those two pages less awkward. You can watch that process all in a tidy little video!

Be sure to check out all the other projects in the first week of Design School and beyond – it’s a great resource with lots of scrapbooking styles represented so you’re sure to find something that catches your eye.

Shimelle, I guess you plan to put more 6×12 pages into the album down the track? Because otherwise haven’t you solved one continuity issue by creating another?

  2. KateT Says:

Wow, fabulous album and so many great ideas. What brand of album is it?
    thanks
    Kate

  3. Ann Says:

Great tips there Shimelle, can I ask what brand and where to obtain those 6×12 photo protector sleeves from (hoping it is uk and not overseas!!)

  4. TiaraHelen Says:

This was very interesting. I haven’t given it much thought for my 12×12 layouts as I don’t make very many, but maybe I need to. I like the idea of the consistent kraft background. It also means you can use A4 paper more easily on layouts.

Why don’t you just photocopy the little cameras? I know copyright is an issue, but given it’s out of print…?

    Thank you as always x

  5. Joanne Says:

That really works well and is a great idea. Think you have just helped me decide what I am going to spend some of my birthday money on – ring albums they do work so much better than post ones!

  6. kaatje Says:

great idea, i’m certain I have some of those somewhere in my craftroom.

  7. Kirsteen Says:

Great video. I am working on our honeymoon photos from 2007 and continuity isn’t something I’ve given much thought to but I try to add a Mickey Mouse head to each of my pages (we went to Walt Disney World for our honeymoon) using gems or buttons and a pre-made embellishment :)

  8. So.Creative Says:

I do LOVE this technique!! Great tip and great video as usual, thank you so much for that idea that I’m gonna follow with the project “journal de vacances 2011” for my daughter that I’m on! Yay!

  9. Jill Says:

Great album Shimelle! I love your fix for creating unity! Sorry you ran out of cameras. The stamp is a great solution!! tfs.

  10. joanna schlos Says:

I love this idea – i loved it so much that i went out and ordered some of the insert pages. I was wondering, do you always have icon theme running through your albums? It is a bit like “where’s waldo” with the camera – i like it but not sure how to “make it” work with my “lack of style”.

  11. Natalie G Says:

Great idea – I’ve been working on our honeymoon photos for the past two years. All the LOs look different although they have some element of continuity in that they are all tropical colours. I like the idea of the 6×12 dividers though, I think I may be able to use some of those to showcase the photos that don’t warrant a LO all of their own!

  12. Cindy Says:

I am a bit worried now as I have never thought of continuity in any of my albums!! I am definitely going to now. It almost seem silly not to.. :(

  13. pidgen Says:

I really think this is just amazing! I took an 18 day trip to Canada and have an ENTIRE album .. but I’ve been finding spare things and I think this just solved my problem for adding in random bits! Thanks a million!

  14. Sabine Says:

Thank you Shimelle, through watching your videos I can improve my scrapbooking very much. I love the way you explain things.

  15. LisaE Says:

Love the stamped camera idea. Honestly, the two pages being different from the others didn’t bother me at all. They went together. Still, I like the addition of the other photos. The graffiti alley certainly seems like a place you want to share lots of photos.

  16. Dawn Says:

I always learn so much from your videos. Thank you!

  17. Jennifer Says:

A terrific idea!! Thanks so much. :)

This tutorial I find very helpful—I began a “travel” album YEARS ago (!!) and am now trying to pull it together—I had just put photos in chrono order on pages—at that time I hadn’t even thought about embellishing those smaller pockets…now I can see (thanks to your many videos) that I can make them “come alive” a lot more…thanks you—love your stuff!! Hugs, Julierose
