guide words began somewhere between the art a day challenge and this slightly sappy story from my classroom. it ended with 30 5x8 collages, all constructed atop the pages of a student dictionary.

or so it seemed.

maybe they didn't quite realise they were requesting it, but so much of the feedback from guide words was 'i wish i could do that' that it earned guide words a second life in the form of an online class and collaboration.

and you are invited.

class includes:
5 online class meetings
15 daily idea emails
15 dictionary pages
online collaborative gallery

sorry, the class is already underway.  please email if you would like to receive information about future classes and publications.

what's involved:

you're invited to join in the discussion at five interactive and online class meetings.  we will chat-and-collage, as we each make at least five pieces.  online classes will cover background techniques, composition, selecting materials, making a statement and fine details, as well as answering any questions you have along the way.  throughout the course, we will focus on not only how to make the art itself, but what ideas you can put forth through such small and simple works. if you can't make the meeting, you'll still get the transcript.

each day, you'll receive a guide words email to keep you thinking, observing and documenting your perspective on language and meaning.  these aren't assignments, exactly.  you won't be checked for completing tasks by a certain time.  but you will be challenged to keep yourself thinking and creating right through the non-art parts of your daily routine.

in the post, you'll receive fifteen pages from the dictionary.  you choose the words or letters or leave it up to random choice -- it's up to you.  you can make up to fifteen collages this way, giving you the freedom to continue past the original five or not feel intimidated if you aren't completely happy with the way a particular piece is going.  this class isn't about intimidation, so you have plenty of freedom for happy accidents and do-overs.

you're also encouraged to submit scans or digital photos of your work for display in a group gallery.  sharing your work along the way will provide us with the collaboration element, allowing you to hitchhike ideas and observe how a group of artists all put their individual touches on similar pieces.  the collages themselves are yours to keep, of course.
